Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy
Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a specialized treatment aimed at improving the function of the pelvic floor muscles. A pelvic floor physio assesses and treats conditions related to pelvic pain, incontinence, and other issues affecting the pelvic region. This treatment can benefit a wide range of individuals, including postpartum women, those experiencing urinary or fecal incontinence, and anyone suffering from pelvic pain. By employing techniques such as manual therapy, exercises, and education, pelvic floor physiotherapy helps restore strength coordination, and overall pelvic health.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy helps people understand and address concerns involving the muscles, nerves, connective tissues, and other structures of the pelvis. The pelvic floor plays an important role in bladder and bowel function, sexual health, reproductive health, core support, and movement. Physiotherapy can help reduce symptoms, improve function, and support a confident return to everyday activities, exercise, and sport.
Treatment is tailored to each individual and may include education, breathing and pressure-management strategies, pelvic floor strengthening or relaxation, coordination and motor-control exercises, hip and core strengthening, mobility work, manual therapy, scar tissue mobilization, and nervous-system regulation techniques. When appropriate, an internal pelvic floor assessment may be offered to better understand muscle tone, strength, coordination, and areas of tenderness. All internal assessment and treatment is optional and performed with informed consent.
Pelvic floor physiotherapy can help with a wide range of concerns, including urinary and fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, painful intercourse, pelvic floor weakness or overactivity, constipation, bladder symptoms, and vulvar or vaginal pain. It is also an important part of care during pregnancy and postpartum, supporting preparation for birth, recovery after vaginal or cesarean birth, management of diastasis and scar tissue, and a gradual return to running, exercise, and sport.
Pelvic floor physiotherapy can also be beneficial before and after surgery. Pre-operative physiotherapy can help individuals understand their pelvic floor and prepare for recovery, while post-operative rehabilitation can support a gradual return to daily activities, exercise, and sexual function. Care may be appropriate following procedures such as hysterectomy, hernia repair, pelvic organ prolapse surgery, or other abdominal and pelvic surgeries, with treatment adapted to the type of surgery and stage of healing.
Care is available for people of all ages and activity levels, whether they are experiencing a new concern or have been living with symptoms for years. Pelvic floor physiotherapy provides a supportive, judgment-free space to talk about pelvic health and develop an individualized treatment plan based on each person's symptoms, goals, and lifestyle.
